Having a strategy is important in virtually any setting for several reasons:
- Direction and focus: A strategy provides a clear sense of direction and helps you focus your efforts on what’s most important.
- Resource allocation: It guides how you allocate limited resources like time, money, and energy.
- Decision-making: A solid strategy serves as a framework for making decisions, both big and small.
- Coordination: In group settings, a shared strategy aligns everyone’s efforts toward common goals.
- Adaptability: A good strategy includes contingencies, making you more adaptable to changes and challenges.
- Competitive advantage: In business or competitive environments, a strong strategy can set you apart from others.
- Efficiency: By outlining priorities and methods, a strategy can increase overall efficiency.
- Measurement: It provides benchmarks against which you can measure progress and success.
- Motivation: Having a clear strategy can be motivating, as it gives you and others a sense of purpose and direction.

Here are some strategies I recommend to my friends and clients who want to help their kids become autodidacts:
Create a Supportive Environment
For children, parents and educators can foster autodidacticism by:
- Being open to teachable moments and encouraging questions
- Cultivating an atmosphere of critical thinking
- Providing access to diverse learning resources (books, educational websites, science kits)
Embrace Constructivist Learning
This approach asserts that children learn best when actively engaged in the learning process. Encourage exploration, experimentation, and hands-on learning experiences.
Set Meaningful Goals
Learners, and kids are no exception, benefit from having clear purposes for their self-education. This could include becoming an expert on a favorite topic, learning cool new skills, solving a mystery or inventing something new.
Develop Learning Habits
Successful autodidacts often create routines and habits that support consistent learning. This might involve setting aside dedicated time for study, maintaining a learning journal, or regularly seeking out new challenges.
